Then, in Chicago Illinois she started her studies in acting in The Second City Training Center in 2009. Her career in television began when she starred as the protagonist of FX's Black comedy crime series Fargo. The show was inspired by Fargo, a 1996 Coen brothers film of similar title, Fargo starred veteran actors Billy Bob Thornton, Martin Freeman and Bob Odenkirk. Tolman's performance in the role of Minnesota cop Molly Solverson was praised by Vanity Fair, who wrote: "She calmly and confidently stole the whole show". Critics' Choice Television Award, Best Supporting Actress (Movie/Miniseries) and Golden Globe nominations were announced in recognition of her role. The following season, the news also that it was announced Tolman was set to play a 2-episode appearance on the Mindy Project as Abby Berman, a romance novelist. In 2015, her second part was played by Michael Dougherty in the film, horror-film Krampus. Tolman turned down several character roles as supporting actors such as best friends, parents, spouses and even husbands after her first big role on Fargo. She was looking for a unique role. Tolman's 2017 role in ABC Downward Dog was based on her role in the Animal Media Group Web Series. After one season it was canceled. Tolman was a part of the ABC drama show Emergence that was launched on September 24, 2019, and was cancelled after one season in May 21st, 2020, despite getting "pretty decent" ratings as per Tolman in her Twitter account. She starred in 2021 as Alma Filcott on the second season of Why Women Kill and Natalie Green in the book The Facts of Life, of Live in Front of a Studio Audience, third edition.
